Video Buffering? Check your Wifi

We continue our tests of Video buffering in Chart 9.  Minor buffering is only evident in ADSL and Fixed Wireless.  If you are experiencing buffering regularly on any technology, try these handy tips.   Obstructions can obscure wifi more than you expect, especially hidden obstructions - any metal or moist materials.

ISP Copper Performance Gap

ADSL and VDSL show a considerable spread in performance for NZ webpage download times, Vodafone ADSL takes twice as long as the best ADSL Slingshot,  the worst VDSL Voyager takes almost twice as long as Spark.  73% of NZ households depend on ADSL to see their favourite websites.

Do all ISPs link to Australian cities directly?

Domain Name Server (DNS), and Latency Performance are important measures of internet performance.  Our quarterly results show little change from last quarter, where Vodafone latency to Sydney, and 2Degrees latency to Melbourne are so large they may go via the USA to get to the peering exchanges we link to.  These are important metrics, as a very large proportion of NZ traffic goes to and from Sydney, and Melbourne is a major centre in the region. Latency can and will impact small file downloads (eg websites), gaming, and potentially video or voice.

The Need for Speed

Throughout August all 4 major ISPs with Fibre 100 service options (Vodafone, Spark, 2Degrees and Orcon), delivered more than 100Mb/s at all times. In addition, MyRepublic improved significantly at 9pm from previous months to 89% at 9pm.

TrueNet focused on the webpage download capability for ADSL this month, because our tests showed a wide spread of results with Slingshot being the standout performer, and Flip not far behind.

Five ISPs are achieving better than 95% of maximum possible speed for ADSL, and VDSL.  (ADSL - Flip, 2Degrees, Spark, Slingshot, and Orcon), (VDSL - Voyager, Spark, 2Degrees, Orcon, and Slingshot).
