ISP Copper Performance Gap

ADSL and VDSL show a considerable spread in performance for NZ webpage download times, Vodafone ADSL takes twice as long as the best ADSL Slingshot,  the worst VDSL Voyager takes almost twice as long as Spark.  73% of NZ households depend on ADSL to see their favourite websites.

Do all ISPs link to Australian cities directly?

Domain Name Server (DNS), and Latency Performance are important measures of internet performance.  Our quarterly results show little change from last quarter, where Vodafone latency to Sydney, and 2Degrees latency to Melbourne are so large they may go via the USA to get to the peering exchanges we link to.  These are important metrics, as a very large proportion of NZ traffic goes to and from Sydney, and Melbourne is a major centre in the region. Latency can and will impact small file downloads (eg websites), gaming, and potentially video or voice.

The Need for Speed

Throughout August all 4 major ISPs with Fibre 100 service options (Vodafone, Spark, 2Degrees and Orcon), delivered more than 100Mb/s at all times. In addition, MyRepublic improved significantly at 9pm from previous months to 89% at 9pm.

TrueNet focused on the webpage download capability for ADSL this month, because our tests showed a wide spread of results with Slingshot being the standout performer, and Flip not far behind.

Five ISPs are achieving better than 95% of maximum possible speed for ADSL, and VDSL.  (ADSL - Flip, 2Degrees, Spark, Slingshot, and Orcon), (VDSL - Voyager, Spark, 2Degrees, Orcon, and Slingshot).

Big Variation between ISPs for ADSL

The 2:1 spread of times taken to download websites on ADSL suggests important differences between ISP connectivity to NZ and USA websites.  This is much larger than would be expected for random events.

TrueNet is looking for volunteers for our ADSL panelist pool because many of our panelists have migrated to new technologies.  Upgrading is not possible for many consumers, and we want to continue measuring ADSL.  If you are interested please visit our Volunteering or our FAQ page  for more detail - being a panelist helps improve NZ internet performance, but also has personal benefits.

After a couple of months of very high quality copper performance from all ISPs, this month congestion is rising again.  ISPs need to maintain capacity as demand growth increases over time.

MyRepublic not so Speedy

TrueNet tests show a consistent under-performance from MyRepublic 100Mb/s Fibre during the busy period after 4pm.  We looked at their speed performance in detail and found that it is significantly below that of Spark, for all download destinations.  Further, our data shows that the sample of NZ public websites downloaded from MyRepublic 100Mb/s fibre probes takes more than twice the time during the hours of peak usage than other ISPs we measure.

Copper connections continue to be offered in NZ with a 5 Star performance.  All NZ internet providers show peak period speeds on copper (ADSL & VDSL) almost equal to off-peak speeds (better than 95% of maximum possible speed).  Interestingly, our panelists in Australia get 4 Stars only, with a measurement of 94%.

RBI Spend Wasted?

There was no change in specific speeds in the three months including March, April & May 2016 in spite of 9 of our panelists who had their connections updated by the Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI).  Only one had a very minor change in performance.

Time of Day variations improved for all RBI funded DSL similar to that of Urban DSL seen in the May 2016 Urban report.  Contention is almost completely absent in the rural RBI funded areas we test.

Volunteer!

Help us compare broadband performance in New Zealand or Australia; in return we provide you with a double reach Wifi on our probe PLUS charts that show your connection performance compared to others on your ISP.
